Closter, NJ

Closter’s rich history, represented in the extensive inventory of historic buildings, links us with the past. Retaining this authentic sense of place protects the Borough’s special character and the collective value of the buildings, neighborhoods and inspired landscapes that shape the community’s identity and provide a sense of stability and enduring values.

Closter’s charm is due in part to the wealth of important historic resources which remind us of the events that shaped the built landscape. These fragile resources merit protection and preservation, or risk being lost to the “teardown” phenomenon. To date, twelve buildings have been designated as historic landmarks and one historic district (West Street/Harrington Avenue Historic District) has been recognized in Closter. However, there are numerous other important historic sites and streetscapes that warrant protection and recognition. Source: http://www.imhistories.org/closter/
